Info: Our guest is John Taliaferro, author of the newly released biography titled “All the Great Prizes: The Life of John Hay, from Lincoln to Roosevelt.” Taliaferro points out that John Hay was a “delicious” subject for a biography because he was not only at Abraham Lincoln’s bedside immediately after his assassination, but he was also at the bedside of William McKinley in 1901. John Hay then went on to serve Theodore Roosevelt as Secretary of State. Taliaferro states that as he looked deeper into American history, he realized that John Hay had a presence in all the major events from the Civil War through the beginning of the twentieth century.
