Sonja Sohn BIO:
Sonja Sohn is probably best known for her portrayal of Detective Shakima Greggs on HBO’s The Wire. For her portrayal of Det. Greggs, Sonja garnered two NAACP Image Award nominations for Best Supporting Television Actress and won The Asian Excellence Award in the same category in 2008. Currently, she co-stars as Det. Samantha Baker on ABC’s new hit drama, “Body of Proof.” After studying at The Lee Strasberg Institute and with renowned acting coach, Susan Batson, in New York City, Sonja broke into the film world in 1998 when she co-wrote and co-starred in the film, “SLAM” which won The Sundance Grand Jury Prize and The Camera D’or Prize at the Cannes Film Festival. Later that year, she also won The Gotham Award for Best Breakthrough Performance for her work in the film. “SLAM” also featured her spoken word talent, which she perfected on the New York Poetry scene in the early ‘90s. As one of the forbearers of that movement., Sonja performed at venues throughout New York City including The Public Theatre, The Nuyorican Poets Café, and SOB’s. During that time, she also toured England and recorded an album for Warner Bros./Coalition Records in London. In addition, Sonja has a also taken her gift for writing and performing to prisons in the form of workshops which she led at Ryker’s Island and the Washington DC jail.

Info: Actor and activist Sonja Sohn discusses the creation and continuing operations of ReWired for Change. It is a non-profit organization in Baltimore, Maryland which works to affect the lives of high risk youth and their families through mentoring, after school programs, and community involvement. Sohn explains how she created a program geared to high risk young people who have been arrested in the past based upon the Home Box Office, Inc. television production called “The Wire.” Sohn played a detective in the show and many people associated with the series served as founding members of ReWired for Change. She talks about her own troubled childhood, which she described in detail while testifying before the Attorney General’s National Task Force on Children Exposed to Violence in November, 2011. She suggests that troubled children need unconditional love and consistency of attention in their lives. She also talks about what motivated her to begin the non-profit group, and how she began her career in acting.
